Chapter President

Tom Crabbs joined SCUBAnauts in the fall of 2008. He is a Captain in the United States Coast Guard, and has served from Virginia to Hawaii and California to Italy, with many duty stations in between. His career has centered on surface operations, maritime law enforcement and international affairs, and includes command of an overseas shore station and major Coast Guard Cutter. He completed Basic Dive Officer, Ship Salvage Dive Officer, and mixed-gas diver training at the Naval Diving Salvage Training Center, Panama City Florida and served four years as a Coast Guard Diving Officer. He lives in Key West with his wife Leslie and their two children; Andrew (14) and Reilly (12).

Gerald CanavanGerald Canavan, the third son of Command Sergeants Major James Canavan, entered the Coast Guard as a Denver certified Paramedic in 1986. Upon graduating from Basic Training he was assigned his first of six afloat billets aboard the Coast Guard Cutter POINT ARENA out of Little Creek, VA. Advancing through the enlisted ranks he held his first Command Billet as the Executive Petty Officer of Coast Guard Station Hatteras, NC with a follow on command billet as the Executive Petty Officer of the Coast Guard Cutter POINT BONITA. While attached to the Navy Fleet Training Group (FTG) Norfolk, he was promoted to the prestigious rank of Chief Petty Officer and received orders as the Officer in Charge of Coast Guard Station Mayport, FL. Excepting his commission as Chief Warrant Officer he transferred to the Coast Guard Cutter JARVIS in Honolulu, HI. In August of 2004 he was assigned as the Commanding Officer of Coast Guard Cutter VASHON, Key West, FL. Making the transition to LT his follow on tour was aboard the Coast Guard Cutter MOHAWK, Key West as the Operations Officer. Currently he is attached to Joint Interagency Task Force South, Key West, Fl as the Caribbean/Atlantic Targeting Officer for the mission of Counter Narcotics and Terrorism. LT Canavan’s awards include the Coast Guard Commendation Medal, both Coast Guard and Navy Achievement Medals, Global War on Terrorism Medal, National Defense Medal, and the Humanitarian Service Medal. LT Canavan is married to the former Laura Fentress of Norfolk, VA. They have two sons, Justin and Christopher, and one daughter (Scubanaut) Meghan.
